It's really a lot simpler than the rest of the folks in
RAH would have you believe:

1) Take a couple of big chunks of aluminum and steel.
2) Stick 'em together
3) Mill away everything that doesn't look like a P-38
4) Stick on a few bits of rubber and bakelite
5) Go flying

Or you could build it from plastic - just carve the outline of a P38 into a
mould, fill the mould with plastic, add acouple of engines and the guns and
fire away!

It's more pleasant to just say that they're undergoing hardware
compression...

Along those lines "no outlet" is more pleasant than "dead end."

As I recall it was the C-47 that they found crushed. Not as tough as a
fighter.

Only one has been removed so far, One of the last comments by one of the
orig. savlage crew on the History?? channel special about Glacier Girl was
that there were 6? more up there if they wanted to restore another one.

Removed years ago, IIRC, ISTS.

Wasn't a C-47 Hugh, no need to go looking for those things, they are
still plying their trade in various areas around the globe, including
Nantuckett. What landed on the ice with the P-38's was a B-17,
possibly an E model but I'm not sure of that detail. Just looked at
the website, the original flight occured in July of 1942 so the B-17
was very likely a model E, which would make it very rare.

Not sure the rest of the P-38's are any more crushed than the one that
was brought up and restored.
