Default Fly-In Breakfast in Iowa City THIS Sunday

Our annual Fly-In breakfast is THIS Sunday, 8/29, from 7 AM till at least 1
PM (Sometimes longer, depending on demand), here in Iowa City. (KIOW --
See airport info at: www.airnav.com/cgi-bin/airport-get?s=IOW )

This is one of the biggest fly-in breakfasts in the Midwest. The FAA
usually sets up a temporary control tower to handle arrivals and departures,
and the weather is predicted to be PERFECT.

This year we've once again got the MATS Constellation dominating (and I mean
DOMINATING -- if you think it looks big at OSH, you should see it parked on
a GA ramp!) our ramp. The crew (who are, of course, staying in our Connie
Suite -- which they made possible with their artwork and memorabilia) will
be giving rides in that big, beautiful machine, for an appropriate donation,
of course.

Having ridden in this very Connie two years ago, I can attest to the sound,
power and fury of those four huge radial engines -- it's truly an experience
not to be missed. With only a few left flying in the world, you need to
check this thing out before they're all in museums!

There will be many R/C airplanes flying on the south end of the field,
dozens of ground displays, and aircraft from all over the Midwest on static
display. It is sponsored by "SERTOMA" (SERvice TO MAnkind"), so you know
your money will be well-spent.

We'll have a booth there this year, giving balloons away to the kids and
schmoozing their parents -- so stop by and say "hi" if you can!

Wow! Sounds like a great program, Jay, best wishes!

There will of course be a petition for all to sign attesting to the value of the
airport and requesting the city fathers to support its continued operation(?).

Hey, good idea!

I'm also going to be recruiting for people to join our advocacy group,
"Friends of Iowa City Airport." It's been a very effective means of
disseminating information and rallying support.

Wish I could be there.
When I was a child I had an opportunity to ride from Dallas to D.C. in a
Connie.
That was nearly 50 years and I still remember it like it was yesterday.
I would love to see one "up close" again!

Will anyone who has a copy of such a thing please forward it to Jay?

Well, it's not the same as "up-close", but I have several close up pix, both
static and in flight as well as a couple of small video clips. I can e-mail
them to you if you would like. Let me know what your screen res is and I'll
send them along.

Hey Jay,

How was the turnout at IOW? I was set to go to a local fly-in this morning
at Windom, but my plane failed pre-flight check.

How was the turnout at IOW? I was set to go to a local fly-in this morning

It was terrific! After an all-day rain on Saturday, Sunday dawned crystal
clear and cool -- perfect for a fly-in breakfast.

It was IFR to the east most of the morning, so that limited fly-ins from
that direction -- but we still had dozens of planes arriving and departing.

The towns-folk turned out in droves, as they always do. We gave away
hundreds of balloons, pounds of candy, and did a drawing for a free night in
the Pan Am Clipper honeymoon suite.

Best of all, the four of us got a ride in the MATS Connie -- with Mary and
me being allowed some right seat time! I got to do a 180 degree turn in
that big, beautiful bird -- what a rush!

I'll be posting the pix and movies later today, with any luck...
