Most of us use the whole airplane for birds... Got 2 ducks at once with an A-6
once! :-)

When I was going through VT-10 back during the first Nixon administration,
one of the squadron's UC-45Js was hit by a buzzard during a low level VFR /
NAV hop over scenic southern Alabama.

(I say "hit by" because the Newtonian mechanics of a large - and in this
case, recently well-fed - buzzard striking a C-45 are a lot different than
those of a pointy-nose taking some poor little sparrow against a wing
hardpoint.)

Luckily the damn thing hit the aircraft square between the pilot and
co-pilot positions, with the gooey red ball of feathers, feet and
semi-digested carrion disintegrating on the way through the cockpit and into
the pax compartment. Not unlike the oft-quoted "hitting-the-fan" metaphor -
just different materials in the scatter.

Everyone made it back safely to the VT-10 line at NPA, but if they could
have clawed their way through the concrete the crew would have shed and
buried their flight suits on the spot - such was the stench. I'm not sure
but I think the poor C-45 was stricken due to the level of damage and the
age of aircraft.

Remember: It's called a "Bugsmasher" - not a "Buzzardsmasher." g

An F-15E from Lakenheath dropped a BDU-33 25lb practice bomb - and

made
an 18 in crater.

Blue death from above!

Little Bitty Blue Death from above!

(Although I did see a guy kill a rattlesnake with a BDU-33 on the
flightline once... yes, it did have a charge in it and yes, the guy was
an idiot.)

Wild turkeys can fly, not very far but they can. While shooting one
Eastern Regionals at Quantico from the 1000 yard line I managed to whack
a crow in flight about 600 yards downrange..........sheer dumb luck, big
puff of feathers and bird bits.

My friend killed a raven airborne over Baker after all the blue meanies
were expended - he hit it with one of the pylons on an F/A-18. The bird
hit the pylon square, rode up the slanted portion of the pylon and right
through the structure between the leading edge flap and the forward spar
of the wing box. He felt it, but as there were no inications of any
trouble in the cockpit, he made a "routine" approach and landing.
Discovered the damage on the postflight walkaround. Those telltale
black feathers...and that hole in the leading edge flap.

Then there was the guy that hit the flock of pelicans on takeoff - five
of them. He got the jet back around and on deck, but not quite as
"routinely"...

i actually hit a raven riding the beast at steamboat
springs. i was coming up the hill to the gas station and he
had just flapped off and banked to grab a thermal.
broke the headlight and dented the ear.
poor guy was messed up but the rangers took him off to a
shelter.

Actually it was Mr. Carlson, not Herb. Herb did some other strange
stuff to animals, though. We never saw it but there were reports he got
ducklings to dance by putting them on a hot plate.

coolest thing i ever saw was a pidgeon land on the third
rail at charles street during a torrential downpour. big
flash, greasy cloud of smoke, a few feathers drifting down
and the pidgeon was gone.

Odd how the Chinese spies were stealing US mapping technology, until a

Y'know it was a big loss when that series was removed, I loved

Our battalion ops sergeant killed a raven with his motorcycle helmet at
highway speed - he managed to stay upright, but he was a little shaken for
the rest of the day.
