Default XM Weather throughout Canada

Hello,

Does anyone have any information when/if we're going to be able to get
our 496 units to recieve Canadian weather information?

Happy Holidays,

Dico

How far north can XM be reliably received from the air? Canada? Alaska?
(How for south also, for that matter...)

I think the question is.. when will Canadian weather information be
broadcast over XM..

not "how far north" before we loose satelite coverage..

One of the guys here has a 496 with XM and here on the east coast
(Prince Edward Island), there is no coverage.. once you get to
Fredricton (New Brunswick) you'll start to pick up some of the
data...then you'll have the data all the way to Toronto. So it is a
bit helpful. But you don't get the TAFS and METARS.

I have a 396 and live in Chatham Ontario. I've called XM several times
over the last year and I get the same answer that "Canadian weather is
coming soon". However, I'll believe it when I see it. The good news
is the radar covers Southern Ontario and I use the METAR's and TAF's
from Detroit City as a proxy for Chatham. Buffalo or Rochester works
for Toronto. It's certainly not ideal...

is this that the weather reports are not transmitted to XM for rebroadcast?
or that XM is not available in any format that far NE?

On trip up the coast in July this year, we lost the XM NEXRAD & Cloud cover
about 2/3 of the way from Bellingham to Ketchican. I don't think that there
are many airports with ground weather reporting in Canada. OTOH the XM
radio was recievable all the way into Anchorage at 12,000'. You can see
where the clouds & nexrad coverage ends if you zoom out.

I just flew KSLC to Calgary and back in the last three days. My 496
showed Metars for Lethbridge CYQL, but not Calgary. It seems that the
XM feed comes from the US, but not from Canada.

Also, when I called Canadian Flight Service to get a briefing to return
to SLC, they would not give me any US Wx because of liability reasons.
When I tried to call 800-992-7433 from the Calagary area, the number
was blocked. I had to find a discrete phone number with area code to
make a toll call to Great Falls FSS to get US WX. What a PITA!
