Default Exhaust for VW motor

I am wondering...
My Sonerai has 4 stub exhausts cut to a 45 degree angle facing forward for
some back presssure.
I want to add some silencers to my setup. (Maybe one on each side...)
Is it important that the distance from each cilinder exhaust port to the
silencer is exactly equal or can I have different lengths of pipe from each
cilinder to the silencer box?
