They're looking at an unusual scattering of ferrous material - of
potentially Japanese origin.

Well, it looks like a crash at least. Check out the engine and prop on the
ground, center left. Rules out augering in, I think.

my guess is: it *used* to be an aircraft.... look at the large
lump to the left side. that might be an engine.
