This, too, shall pass. Best way to help speed that passage is not to
reply to "those" posts.

Yes I do remember..As for the Sea Control ship loaded with F-35's and
Osprey..Forget it..The CVN will continue as the lead ship of the Navy.
Last week the Navy cut the steel for the as yet unnamed CVN-78. Majoor
construction will start in 2 years.

"Billposter,"

Tell us more. Especially about VF-2. (Were you a part of this outfit? If so,
when?)

Nope,
but in the early-1940's they and VF-5 with F3F-3's were deployed on the
Yorktown.

VF-5, and it's F3Fs, wasn't aboard for long after Yorktown rejoined the
Atlantic Fleet. They were replaced on 23 May 1941 with VF-41 which, in
turn, was replaced, on 14 June, by VF-42; both operated F4F-3's. VF-42
stayed with Yorktown through Coral Sea and then made up the majority of
the pilots in VF-3 at Midway.

1941 was a time of changes for the Atlantic carriers, biplanes were
going away and newer types coming in. Some squadrons were changed
completely; VF-42, up until February 1941 was VS-41 aboard Ranger
operating SBUs. Then one day "poof, you guys are now fighter pilots"
and they were off to Chambers Field to start checking out in F4Fs.

Regards,

Rich
