Where to go for on-field camping near Texas?
I am thinking of renting a 172 and going for overnight camping within 4
hours flying distance of North Dallas. I am an AOPA member and I did a search for the fields that allow camping but without descriptions, it is hard to decide. It would be nice to hear from others who have done this. All we are looking for is a field that allows camping ( 4 hours from KADS) and it should have interesting surrounding. One thought is to go fly to SE New Mexico and see some mesas. Does anyone have any comments on New Mexico? Thanks in advance. SP |

Lake Whitney State Park at Lake Whitney between Waco and Dallas has an airport with a short walk to the campsites. Scenery is ok, nothing too great. Finding a place to camp on the field is a problem. Consider flying to Arkansas to Ft Smith, Northwest Regional, or Rogers / Springdale / Fayetteville and renting a car. You can get to some real good camping areas that way and save a LOT of time over what it would take to drive that far. It's a shame that more of the great state parks we have in Texas especially in the hill country don't have airports. |

3T0 up on lake Texoma. This is Cedar Mills Marina. You can camp on the
field. If you camp down on the east side of the runway you will be near the lake. Restrooms are available. There is a restaurant in the Marina. 3T0 is a popular place to flyin for breakfast and lunch. Cabins are also available on the runway to rent. I camped at Dodge City, Kansas (DDC) last summer on my way to Oshkosh from Phoenix in a 150. Not much to see at the airport itself but the folks at the FBO were very friendly about my pitching a tent in their infield. -R |

In central Arkansas, Petit Jean airport (KMPJ) has camping on the
field, and a state park a short ride away. Less than 3 hours away from Denton (KDTO) in a typical spamcan. Very pretty countryside and a scenic flight over the mountains of southwestern Arkansas to get there. Not many good places there for an emergency landing off-airport tho'. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KMPJ wrote: I am thinking of renting a 172 and going for overnight camping within 4 hours flying distance of North Dallas.
