Default WX and flying report: Upcoming Region 10

Thinking that maybe a few of you aren't sure about the soaring quality
for the Region 10 contest in August...

This weekend conditions were such that according to the OLC-U.S. page,
Saturday's third ranking scored flight (and longest distance in the
U.S.) came from Greater Houston Soaring Assoc. member Steve Nichols in
his Nimbus 3/25. On Saturday 6/20 Steve was scored with 802K. Friday
he did 727K and yesterday 684. I flew my Genesis 2 Friday and went
412K without water. And yesterday another club member did his 500K
diamond distance in a LAK 17, without water.

What makes Steve's score impressive: the other top U.S. flights around
him occurred out west or around mountains and ridges. In our flying
area, it's very flat. Total thermal and cloud street dependent.

So we're getting some excellent conditions right now. Central Texas is
very dry and the flow off the Gulf pushes some really nice CUs across
what will be the Region 10 task area. Hopefully this trend will
continue into August.

So think about... go to www.houstonsoaring.com/2009R10 to learn more
(and enter) what could be a really good regional contest.
