I can just imagine the reaction in Manhattan to anyone trying it even

there were ground-to-air defenses of some sort hidden away as well.

It shows up on mapquest and google earth.

I think you misunderstood. There's no question the mockup exists on that
roof. The hypothetical reaction I was writing about was to the idea of
someone trying to land or take off with an actual aircraft (like the
Zenith CH701 someone suggested).

Heh.

With a reasonable headwind a Zenith CH701 could do it.

Yup... I agree, my Zenith 801 could pull that off....

Benwww.haaspowerair.com

Can the 801 match the performance of the 701? *While both at Max
Gross? *Curious.

Wil

Good question. All things considered I believe the 801 might be at a
slight disadvantage because it can haul a higher percentage of its net
weight. Now when you add "alot" of extra horsepower it increases the
performance drastically. Dont ask how I know. :)

Yeah, I think it could even do it zero wind, eh?
One of those Slepcev Storchs could definitely do it.

Bertie

A Storch is almost a helicopter. It would be a lot of fun to build and
fly one.

I know someone who is building the Pazmany version. Most guys are doing
the Slepcev version which is much simpler. It's 3/4 scale and it;s still
huge! Unbelievably complicated too. They had to make their own landing
gear oleos, for instance. and the slat system is unbelievable. Make a
great airplane when it's done. Too bad it will have a Lycoming and not
an Argus or some other V8

The Storchs do look more hefty than the Zeniths, but I wonder how
their actual performance compares. I have seen many videos of the 701
fly (incredible). I haven't yet seen a video of the Storchs fly,
although I've read many write ups.

I saw one fly once a few years ago. It got up and went alright. I'm sure
you could run next to it in even a mild breeze.
I'd go for a Storch just cause of what it is, but if I wanted a
workhorse, i'd probably go for the Zenith. I think it's a lot cheaper,
too.

and a lot easier to built from what I have read. More likely for a
fella to get into the air sooner. No pun intended.

Well, I think the Slepcev one comes fairly well prefab. I suppose it
depends on how much of that you pay for.

Well, the Storch is a tube and fabric and the Zenith is a stressed
aluminum skin. The Storch would be my preference, but if I had to
build it myself I'd probably go with the Zenith for ease of
construction. Many people have actually built Zenith from plans,
without buying the kit at all. I would still opt for the kit though,
if I was ready to built a plane.

Still it;s kind of interesting how similar they are in so many ways. you
gotta love a machine that does something well no matter what it might
look like. They always look purposeful.
