Female pilot killed in action

The first female American pilot to be killed in the Iraq conflict was
being mourned yesterday after her helicopter was brought down by a
missile.

Capt Kimberly Hampton, 27, died after her OH-58 Kiowa helicopter went
down under fire from insurgents near Fallujah, central Iraq, at the
weekend, her parents said. Her co-pilot was injured.

Capt Hampton had been stationed in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne
Division since September.

Her parents, Dale and Ann Hampton, from Easley, South Carolina, said
their daughter had wanted to be a pilot since she was a child.

The Kiowa, which must be operated by two people, is often used to spot
targets for Apache attack helicopters.

Capt Hampton, who was based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, had also
served as an army pilot in South Korea and Afghanistan.
