ok I cannot actually *prove* these are all from GNAS, but they're all
from when I was there in the late 80s, or very early 90s.

yes, in funniness, that is what you smell as you drive along Willow Rd.

actually, it is a garbage dump along Willow Rd, just outside of where
Glenview Naval Air Station was. that garbage dumo was there before
'The Glen'

I don't know about currently, but when I lived there, there were these
little torches lit along the 'hills' where i guess all the garbage was
buried. IIRC, they were little pipes or whatever, that let the methane
escape and burn so it wouldn't all go kaboom.

I'd imagine now, since THE GLEN is there, instead of the Naval Air
Station, there is a lot MORE suburban waste being generated, perhaps
adding to the size & smell of that garbage dump along Willow Rd.

it's difficult to tell from the photo - but I am leaning towards it

and also the Strike Eagles were painted darker, as one one in the photo
seems to be.

The photo is grainy too, but it looks like a FAST pack next to the
intake. Did the "A" have those? (IIRC, no.)

:Since the F-15A and C (with the exception of two TF-15A development

:aircraft you might take another look at the photo.

It can be easier than that. From most angles you can see the 'break'
in the wing flow where the glove vane goes in and out and/or where the
pivot for the swing wing is

I haven't driven up there recently, but other dumps i've seen have removed
the torches and instead run the methane in small power generators, so at
least it's not just a wasted burn.

I think in addition to not burning the methane straight out, they put few
inches of topsoil on the ground and now they have a nice grass covered golf
course... that probably eliminated most of the smell.

thanks for the confirmation for the other people.

man, every once in awhile, I heard & felt the mighty roar of the F-15
Eagles as they roared over my house and backyard, landing at the
Glenview Navy Base.

Although I saw F-16 Falcons much more often. F-16s were as frequent a
sight as Navy F-14 Tomcats and F/A-18 Hornets, coming into Glenview,
circling around, or maybe taking off.

I think I remember an F-117 Nighthawk Stealth fighter over Glenview.
don't know if it was taking off or landing at GNAS, but I'm pretty sure
I saw the Stealth at least once or twice. it was most likely the early
1990s. maybe Gulf War related activity. dunno.

but my most fond memory......

one particular day in the 1980s, maybe on Armed Forces Day (not sure)
..........
an F-15 Eagle came *screaming* in, doing rapid barrel rolls over my
yard as it headed in the direction of GNAS....not the typical approach
that USAF and Navy jets usually did.

I will NEVER forget that.

no, not that expensive....

well, my old house, a 3-bedroom, 2 full bath, brick, tri-level, no
full basement
(just utility sub basement) single car garage, built in the 1940s:

http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/7...khouse28lh.jpg
(photos from the 1980s)

after being a spruced up a little (windows, roof) sold for well over
*** $400,000 ***
a year or two ago

so I'd imagine that some of the larger new homes in 'THE GLEN' sell
for a lot more, approaching $1 million, with prices of new but
lower-end houses being in the $500K - $750 range. just a guess.
