Never noticed this before, while cruising the LIFE magazine photo archives
spotted this photo and then several others. look at the thickness of the windscreen glass from this German aircraft , left behind in the western desert. ========================

The pilot's body was protected by the engine block, but the head needed additional protection from return fire. Brian Ehni

The P-38J & L had a slab of similar thickness (perhaps not quite as thick) installed in an interior frame between the gunsight and the pilot.
