Never noticed this before, while cruising the LIFE magazine photo archives
spotted this photo and then several others. look at the thickness
of the windscreen glass from this German aircraft , left behind in the
western desert.

IIRC, this kind of bullet proof was applied to ground attack (strafing)
aircraft. The pilot's body was protected by the engine block, but the
head needed additional protection from return fire.

The P-38J & L had a slab of similar thickness (perhaps not quite as
thick) installed in an interior frame between the gunsight and the
pilot. This was in addition to the primary windscreen.
