Day 2 of 18m WGC

While it is early, I can't help but notice the gliders in the top 20 of each of the first two days... ASG29 wins Day 1 (Diana3 second), JS-3 Day 2. Combined top 20 scoring so far: Eight JS-3 (1, 2, 8, 12, 12 (tie), 15, 16, 18). Eight Ventus3 (4, 4 (tie), 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 17), two ASG-29 (3, 14), one Ventus 2cxa FES (19), one JS-1C (20).

Gliders from 35th to 45th - seven ASG-29's; two JS-1's; two Ventus 2cx's...

It will be VERY interesting to see if strong conditions (1000 pt days) will shift things (685 pts Day 1, 804 Day 2).

What will Day 3 bring?

For those keeping score at home it would appear the shiny new V3s and JS3s mostly went to the highest ranked pilots - and were pretty evenly distributed. Median FAI pilot ranking by glider:

V3: 64
JS3: 56
ASG29: 688

Ought to be a reasonable comparison of the two newest designs.

The new generation gliders flew in the 15 meter WGC and the pilots I corresponded with from that event thought, at least in 15 meter, there was no different between the last gen and current gen. The Dianna 2 was still considered the best glider, the V2 was still the best climber and the British reported no problems team flying wing tip to tip with a JS3 and ASG-29. Eighteen meter might be different.

Plus an ASG29 is in second place overall after winning day 1.

Maybe some planes are better than others...

....at finding the right pilots to fly them?

In the 15 meter World's, an ASG-29 won and a Dianna 2 got second place, with a Ventus 2ax in fourth place. I am sure the pilots had some part in the excellent results. But are the next gen gliders actually better? One would think the V3 with a max wing loading of 11.3 pounds, will be at a disadvantage to the birds flying at 12 pounds or more.
