From my reading of flarm and my limited knowledge about the product.

I understand that you could in theory have the location of other gliders on
screen and use it to your advantage during a competition given that it
transmits such data?

The range of FLARM is very limited, so FLARM won't show any glider
that you copuld not see with your own eyes.

FLARM's range is around 2-3 km, subject to antenna installation.

The announced range is 1-3 km, but the alarm/display filters whatever is not
within 18 seconds of an impact. You won't see any ship sensibly higher or
lower, or not sensibly converging ... so you couldn't really use it "at your
advantage" unless you build your own FLARM-compatible receiver !
