Hi Kevin,

Depends. The global scenery comes on 6 DVDs, not CDs (!) and usually is
sold with X-Plane 8.21 or later. So if the DVD you get at your local
store has X-Plane 8.21 or later, it will be compatible with the global
scenery. If you buy a pre-8.21 version, it will not work.

Not entirely correct. The X-Plane sold in stores is version 8.00. It is not
compatible with the new global scenery, but you can download the latest
upgrade (compatible with Global Scenery) to the latest X-Plane version on
www.x-plane.com

I think there's a bit of misunderstanding here.

X-Plane is updated by the author quite often. But you get the first release
(currently, release 8.00) on the DVD.

Then, after you have installed X-Plane 8.00 from the DVD, you can simply
download the latest release (8.40 at this moment) from the website
www.x-plane.com, and update it.

Obviously, later releases have always some improvements in realism and other
feautres over previous ones.

And, for recent versions (8.2*-- or so), there is auto-update
software which picks needed updates without any hassle.. pretty neat
actually..
