Default How long are our re packs good for?

I saw in either Flying or AOPA Pilot that the FAA has passed the request so
that our chute packs are now good for 180 and not 120 days.

When does it take effect? Is my pack that just expired actually still good?

TIA

Effective December 19, 2008, the repack intervals for parachutes governed
under parts 91 and 105 increase to 180 days
