Good old Dead-eye Redeye! I qualified with those back in '73.
The Stinger came out shortly after that.

I got sent to Redeye from HAWK at MCAS Cherry Point in late '66. We only had
Redeye simulators; they looked like the real thing, but were used for
training. Anyway, we would test the thing by acquiring a cigarette across
the room.

Ours must have been enhanced, we could track the cig at 100m.

There was an apocryphal story going around about the guy who forgot to
super-elevate before firing. The missile hit the ground and lost lock on
the target. It then reaquired lock, but the heat source was a latrine.
Luckily the commode uas unoccupied when it was obliterated.

That sounds like a couple of scenes in recent movies where the hero
points at the bad guys, acquires, and blasts away. One was with Clint
Eastwood and the other -- I can't remember. Also, one of Tom Clancy's
books had the Afghans fighting against the Soviets and using a red eye
to home in on an electric heater in the guard tower.

Cheers,

Dave
