Thank you
Thank you to all who have offered me help with setting up Thunderbird as a reader for rec.aviation.soaring. In spite of the help I have not been able to figure out how to set it up. I don't mind really. Google Groups is good enough for me.

I don't mind really. Google Groups is good enough for me. I don't know what you've tried previously, but these instructions will work for thunderbird: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...sgroup-account Sorry, I can't seem to make this work as a hyperlink but you can copy and paste it into your browser. I set the newsgroup to: news.eternal-september.org, port 119 which was the default If you use eternal-september.org as your newsreader, you need to go to their website and set up an account. There's further information there to make it all work. Eventually, you'll have to subscribe to the newsgroup during the setup. Look out! When first set up, you'll be presented with close to 100,000 threads. You'll have to mark as read most of them to clean up. It doesn't take too long... Good luck! -- Dan 5J |

I gave it another try, using your suggestions. It seemed to set up ok but when I clicked on "Get Messages" nothing seemed to happen. Maybe I didn't wait long enough. I'll try again. |

First off, I right clicked on the newly created Soaring Newsgroup that I'd created and selected "Subscribe", then entered rec.aviation.soaring. Question: Did you register on eternal-september.org? And this is the last thing I picked up from eternal-september.org: Client Settings Server name: news.eternal-september.org Port : 119 (NNTP) Port : 563 (encrypted connection NNTPS) Hope all of that helps! -- Dan 5J |

I'm working on it. You're trying to use Thunderbird on a Mac. Last I heard, it had been supported on only 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, but now even that support has ended. That was only for Thunderbird 45. Maybe there's something better suited for Macs these days. -Dave |

Eric Greenwell suggested nntp.aioe.org. I Googled " how to set up nntp.aioe.org in Thunderbird ", , the second link found was " https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...sgroup-account " The process took all of 3 minutes, and worked first time. You can open both your browser and Thunderbird, side by side, to make configuration easy. You can put " nntp.aioe.org " in your mouse buffer for your cutting and pasting pleasure, and finally you will have to sift through all the Usenet accounts to find " alt.recreation.soaring " and check that Check Box. -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus |

A friend is going to give me an older Mac to try it out on. If it works, I'll report back. -- Dan 5J |
