14 miles (as the crow flies). Takes me about 25 minutes each way.

10 minutes. I'm three miles away, but on the wrong side of the airport. Very
annoying.

30 minutes by bike
20 minutes by car
15 minutes by motorcycle :-)

I used to fly weekly at a site 1 hour 15 minutes away, and frequently
(monthly) trailered my glider to a site a bit more than three hours
away. Sometimes there, fly, back in one day, although I usually overnighted.

Separate to the quality of the flying, I believe that distance is less
important
than the ease of travel. Cost though must now come into it, as the cost of
fuel
is rapidly rising.

My old club was 75 miles, with 62 miles being motorway. That took
70 mins on a really good day, with 90 mins in the middle of summer with
the holiday traffic. That club closed for good in March.

I have another club just 27 miles away, but despite making numerous
attempts to fly there, they seem to spend more time on the ground than
in the air. The trip would be about 40 mins as quite a lot of it is on
small roads. The poor possibility of getting into the air here is more
important than the ease of travel.

There is another club 52 miles away, with 20 miles being motorway
and it took me this weekend 70 mins out and 85 mins return. They fly
close to a 7 day week, with winch staff on site throughout the summer
months. And the fact that it well away from the sea is a bonus. You have
to remember that the furthest you can get from the sea in the UK is 84 miles
or so, so sea breeze front affects lots of clubs.
This looks like being my new abode for the future.

Fuel costs:- Out there in the USA I believe your fuel costs are similar to
ours
of 25 years ago. I just calculated that my fuel costs £4.232 for a US
gallon
(4.54 l/UK gallon, 3.68 l/US gallon). So I guess that's about $8.252/gallon
for US people.

I would be interested in what you are currently seeing on fuel costs :-)

When the cost of getting to the site is more than the cost of flying, I
believe
a lot of will move to a closer club, or with all the other extra
costs/legislation,
will fade away..

PS. does "GR8 to have service back" mean you only post through
gliderpilot.net, or was your local computer service interrupted?

Hi Paul and everyone else who has taken time to provide interesting
feedback (notice 20+ replies but only on # 5 at the moment smile), MUCH
appreciated! Re r.a.s, my "ignorance" is such that only viewed / posted
via Gliderpilot.net :-( Guess not able to be good at everything proves I
am human! Back to reading the replies, maybe I should build a spreadsheet
and do an analysis? Nope, would rather spend some time with gliding
(sorry SOARING) stuff :-) All the best and as always, FLY SAFE! VBR

Hi Malcolm :-) Thank you for the detailed feedback 9and all other
contributors). It is most interesting to read (with tongue in cheek for a
couple but that is to prevent 'envy' from being displayed on my part....
WHO has a REAL job when you either live the wrong side of the airfield OR
can WALK to the airfield.... BIG SMILE) and in my own case living
approx 9 Km from Jhb International (oops, sorry, need to be PC - O.R.
Tambo) puts us bang in middle of TMA. This then is why need to travel to
edge of air space in order to fly gliders. Tried power flying / motor
gliding at close by airfield (25 min, about 15Km) but it is not the
same... Yes, fuel is a big factor and currently rocketing in price :-(
Agree that 'quality' is worth more than travel time / cost and as
'inactive' for a decade or more and not getting younger, decided time to
again take to the sky! Big factor is hangerage as the Jaskolka (my glider)
is not a easy / quick rig ship (1956 ish) plus reliance on 'crew / club
members is marginal being that I do not belong in the "glass racing ship
brigade"... I digress... Current fuel cost is acceptable as I drive a
diesel and manage about 5 lt / 100Km on a run (Alfa GT 1.9 - VERY nice!
Well I think so...) Different story if I were to use my 'other'
vehicle, 1990 Range Rover classic at about 18l /100Km if being careful!
Problem is no tow bar on the Alfa and the Rangie is a fantastic tow
vehicle! Guess will have to curb the idea of x/c... Oh, fuel is now over
R10 per litre... As always, have FUN and FLY SAFE! very best regards to
all

My glider club (and storage for my Jantar) is 90.0 miles from home on
straight rural roads with light traffic. I drive it in 1h 25m while
listening either to loud music or some kind of informative podcast.
Or, I can drive to the airport (15min) and fly down (45min) for a 1h
10m total, including preflight. The extra cost of flying is
proportional to the extra fun of flying, but sometimes we don't have
enough money to have two kinds of fun in one day.
