Back in the early 90's when ICAS and the FAA implimented their ACE
aerobatic certification program, each pilot was supposed to be tested by
a more knowledgeable, experienced performer before being given
accredidation to perform at a given aerobatic level in airshows.
So far, this program has been a disappointment in that it has failed to
adequately screen performers.

I understand that several VAC officials BEGGED him not to fly his
routine yesterday, as the ceilings were too low.

What I heard was that he did a loop, with the top in the clouds, then
intended to do a Cuban Eight and apparently lost orientation at the top,
in the clouds, and failed to recover.

Every airshow waiver from the FAA has a ceilings and visibility section
defining the minimums. If the conditions of the waiver were not met and
the airshow was being conducted, someone has some questions to answer.

The pilot in question is Elion Krugman-Kadi a former Israeli Fighter pilot
and Faculty Flight Instructor at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Skill level was high as was his competency with the l-39. However in the
never ending battle between hunks of aluminum traveling at many hundreds of
miles per hour and the ground traveling at 0 miles per hour, the ground has
yet to lose. If anyone is interested I will post the missing man flight
from this afternoon's show in honor of Elion.
