Default My email to CBS

I will be watching the "Eye on America" piece tonight about security at
small airports.

If the tone of the piece is remotely like the promotions I have seen, it
will be the end of a decades long belief that CBS News is the best network
source for fair and accurate reporting. It will also be the beginning of
avoiding any watching of CBS.

It is not just that I am a private pilot and concerned about aviation. That
pales compared to the questions just the language of the promo raises about
being an American and the freedoms we are promising to the oppressed around
the world.

How about this as a promo for your next piece?

You can load anything you want into a truck in the driveway of your home!
You can then drive that truck anywhere you want!
You can park it on any public street in front of 99% of the buildings in the
nation!
You can park in tunnels and let the air out of the tires!
You can park it under bridges!
You could put a bomb in that truck!

The questioning of our most basic freedoms and the atmosphere of fear that
just the promo panders to in the most irresponsible and vile way already
fills me with disgust for your network.

I expect to be tuning CBS in for the last time this evening.

The report was my worst nightmare. The fact that it focused on residential
airparks hit closer to home that I could have imagined.

And to imagine that CBS is my network channel of choice.....

Here's my response to them:

I am writing in reference to your January 14, 2004 evening news article on
the regarding the alleged threat posed by general aviation.

While many people cower in their homes glued to their television bracing
themselves for the next terrorist attack (which just happens to create huge
profits to "news" organizations as yourself), the more enlightened of us are
merely disgusted by your ridiculous sensationalism.

There is a simple reason security at general aviation airports remain
unchanged: it's "Not Necessary".

Your own report demonstrated the devastating effects of a small plane
ramming into a skyscraper: a single window was damaged. The 9/11 terrorists
knew this themselves: they left their GA planes sitting peacefully on the
tarmac as they committed their horrendous deeds. These small planes are an
inefficient tool compared to countless other destruction delivery methods.

It is selfish and irresponsible reporting such as this which prompts
individuals to toss away their freedoms in return of some perceived safety.
In the end, the terrorists win - and you gain market share. Just who's side
are you on, anyway?

How do you plan to scare us tomorrow night? I'm sure you have the teaser
cued and ready.

I rarely watch CBS news after their decades of biased reporting. Do you
remember the "Guns of Autumn" where they trashed hunters? Do you remember Dan
Rather introducing coverage of Pres.Bush's speech saying "like him or not he is
still our president"?
Even though it's not perfect, I much prefer NBC news with Tom Brokaw. He grew
up in a small town in S. Dakota and has values (like fairness).
I emailed CBS news about this ridiculous story. I hope others do also.

For those of you still watching CBS, or who are willing to watch it
tonight for this purpose, you would do better to write, email, or
telephone its advertisers to protest their dollars being spent to
support such drivel.

How about a turn around. Letters of praise to CNN and NBC (?)
for "good" GA stories? A good flood of letters saying you're going
to encourage everyone you know to watch networks that report
fairly on subjects.

Being in the UK, the US media bemuses us. Unfortunately, we've
seen standards start to creep downwards here with Channel 5
news and so on, but they've a long way to go to reach the likes of
Fox and CBS! Even the long-known-for-its-good-news-service
ITN is getting more sensationalist (though in UK terms, which is
still rather subdued compared to the US stuff). Thank goodness
the BBC isn't going that way. I hope it never does.

That's a great idea. I will certainly do that. IF they ever run one, and IF I
ever start watching their programs again. I'm not sure which is more unlikely.

"Hummmmm... That's interesting...."
