Default Best deal on renter's insurance?

I'm getting back into flying after a few years away, and I've learned that
my FBO's insurance deductible has gone up a fair piece since then. Back
then I was willing to eat the deductible if something happened to the
plane, but it's too pricy now.

So I'm shopping. Who's got the best rate these days? I need coverage for
a $2500 deductible. I vaguely recall AOPA used to have some kind of
deal for its members... do they still? I'm not a member at the moment,
but certainly can be.

Thanks in advance.

The FBO's policy insures the FBO, not you. You need a million dollars'
liability, and you should also have hull insurance against damage
caused to the rental plane by you. The FBO's insurer will come after
you, and not just for the deductible.

I paid $575 last year for $1 million / $100,000 liability and $20,000
hull insurance. When I renew, I'll probably remove the $100K limit on
individual liability, since I now carry the occasional passenger, and
I'll probably increase the hull insurance, since the price of Cubs is
going up.

What company will let you do that? (for non-owner's insurance)

That's what I've heard, and that's why I carried hull insurance on my
non-owned policy. BUT, the guy who owns my home airport and a dozen or
more planes said that he's never seen the insurance company go after the
renter. Most recently someone flipped one of his 172s after losing
control on the runway in a crosswind. Insurance covered the accident,
the renter paid the deductable, and there was no subrogation.
Unfortunately the owner has gotten the "we may change or cancel your
coverage in 90 days" warning letter.
