these 5 pilots are credited with downing 9 of the 29 attacking Japanese
planes that were lost.

===============
Nine Japanese planes were shot down by these five young air corps officers
during the raids on Oahu a week ago Sunday. Left to right they are-2nd Lt.
Harry W. Brown, who bagged one Japanese plane; 2nd Lt. Philip M.
Rasmmussen, one plane; 2nd Lt. Kenneth M. Taylor, two planes; 2nd Lt.
George S. Welch, four planes; 1st Lt. Lewis M. Sanders, one plane. Lts.
Welsh and Taylor are to receive Distinguished Service Crosses.

Interesting...what were they flying? Got any links?

Taylor and Welch flew P-40s took off from an Aux field at Haleiwa.
At Wheeler Field, four pilots, including Lt. Philip Rasmussen, were able
to take off in outdated P-36A aircraft and engage the enemy over Kaneohe
Bay.

Lt. James Sterling also got into the air, but was shot down while
attacking a bomber which he shot down and
Lt Sanders shot down the Japanese plane that got Sterling.

army reports at least 14 army planes were able to get into the air

Just to add a bit,, My parents were there in Hawaii in 1941, Dad was on
duty with the 55th Coast Artillery, Mom was in High school there, Dad
lost his buddy Edward F. Sullivan when a Zero crashed into the street at
Ft Kam. the coast artillery installation near the entrance of Pearl
Harbor.
