Default DUO DISCUS GROUNDED AS OF 31 JULY 2003

WTH IMEDIATE EFFECTIVENESS THE GERMAN AUTHORITIES HAVE SUSPENDED THE
AIRWORTHINESS OF THE DUO DISCUS (T)
ALL DUO'S ARE GROUNDED DUE TO A WING FAILURE IN FLIGHT (BOTH PILOTS BAILED
OUT AND LANDED SAFELY WITH THERE CHUTE.)

Hi Eric,

thank god the pilots are safe!

Do you know anything more about how the accident happened?
Are there any 'official' sources, e.g. like www.bfu-web.de
where an analysis of such accidents is done?
Failure of the wings sounds a bit like they went 'very' fast
before the glider broke?

Safe landings!
Bernd

Report by LBS states "manouevering speed" - ergo a lot below Vne...
There was no reference to unusual attitudes, turbulence or any other
factor. The LBA report implies that the wing failed while being flown in
the certified flight envelope.

One assumes they would not ground the fleet on grounds of not being
airworthy unless they were fairly sure there was some structural fault.

Question is whether it was a singular fault, damage to the specific
aircraft, or generic to the design.

Southern Sailplanes, the UK agents, have been told
that the wing failed about 4 metres from the tip.
The glider was still flying (presumably not very well)
and so the pilots were able to get out successfully.
Apart from the fact that all the Duos with the relevant
serial numbers are grounded they have no information
as to what action needs to be taken by owners until
an Airworthiness Directive appears.

Nothing too serious. Just cut a few dozen holes in each wing, do a
borescope inspection and if you are lucky, repair the holes. Should be back
in action by the end of the season. Ours is booked in for Monday.
