Hundreds of Typhoons will be produced during a number of years to come... I wouldn't exactly call that "totally dead". |

There was a speculative piece in the Grauniad a couple of weeks touting the idea that 1/3 of the production MAY bet at risk, that is 236 out of the planned 620 aircraft. The initial production aircraft are being delivered with both the RAF and Spanish Air Force having received aircraft. Keith |

While negotiations are ongoing the points at issue have been reported as the level of equipment and upgrades involved. There's a story in todays Daily Telegraph again suggesting the Third tranche may be delayed or cancelled but nothing about the second tranche and it ends Quote A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence insisted that the Eurofighter was an effective aircraft but declined to comment on future spending announcements. "We are still committed to Eurofighter," he said. /Quote Interestingly pressure to accelerate the orders for the second tranche is now coming from Germany which is keen to replace some of its obsolescent aircraft currently in service. The story as it ran in the Aero-News email letter this morning: UK Eurofighter Gets The Ax One-Third Cut In British Defense Spending Puts Warplane On Hiatus It's late, over budget and now, out of date. The British procurement of the so-called Eurofighter is over. The Eurofighter -- Britain's version is called the Typhoon -- "is a dead duck. Unfortunately we are stuck with it, but there is no way this Government is going to buy any more. It's expensive and obsolete." That word came from a senior Defense Ministry official quoted in the London Daily Telegraph. British military leaders apparently agreed with the assessment, but only after being assured the savings would be spent on UCAVs, smart missiles and other high-tech weapons systems. Two phases of the Typhoon deployment have already been carried out. So far, 144 aircraft have been delivered. The first 55 -- air-combat only -- were six years late. The second batch of 89 aircraft, which have ground-attack capabilities, has yet to be delivered. All Eurofighters are now grounded because of engine problems. There are even questions about the need for a Eurofighter fleet. Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, the former Chief of the Defence Staff who retired earlier in the year, was skeptical of the need for more Eurofighters. He asked in an interview with the Telegraph, "Do we need to have 232 fighters in the modern context?" His point is this: UCAVs -- unmanned combat aerial vehicles -- will star replacing manned aircraft within 20 years. That's just a few years after the final batch of Eurofighters are due to enter service. Which is contradictory in itself since the one third cut would be the third tranche which is not due to be ordered until 2007 The Eurofighter -- Britain's version is called the Typhoon -- "is a dead duck. Then somehow 89 of those 144 have not been delivered? Ron Pilot/Wildland Firefighter |

Not even ordered yet, for the RAF the original plan called for orders in 3 tranches, the first for is being delievered now, orders for the second tranche (the 89) are under negotiation now and must be ordered by Jan 1 2004 or there are consequences for cost etc. The third tranche which is reportedly at risk is not due to be ordered until 2007.
