He had a ... challenging ... childhood.

His father (well, I'm 30% sure he was Maxie's father, altho Maxie isn't
quite so sure) seemed to take too much of an interest in him, if you
get my drift. Not that a little discipline is bad for a boy, but
sometimes the old coot would get carried away...
