Default Icom IC-A5/23 and David Clark

*Thomas Schmidt* wrote [Tue, 10 Aug 2004 18:01:54 +0200]:

I have a question regarding the headset connection between a Icom
IC-A5/A23 handheld transceiver to a David Clark H10-13X headset.
Are there any known problems or compatibility issues?

While doing a product review, Avionics West Inc. has made some
tests about the compatibility with different headset models. See
http://www.avionicswest.com/articles/a23.htm.

Can anyone confirm their experience? If it won't work properly in
combination with my 10-13X the unit does not make any sense as a
backup device during flight.

BTW, why is the newer handy A-5 model much cheaper than the "old"
and clumsier A-3? Anybody has an idea?

Thanks for your help!

Nobody uses an Icom A-5??? Please help!

I bought an ICOM A-5 (more as a 'call-clearance-delivery-with-the
Master-Off' device than an in-flight backup), but did get the headset
adapter. Just like the Avionics West review stated, there was feedback
when transmitting with the DC 13.4 headset. I was able to minimize it
by putting a split bead ferrite on the adapter cord, but it still
occasionally does it, depending on the orientation of the cable to the
antenna. I wouldn't want to depend on it in an emergency.

I bought an A5 at OSH and noticed when using a DC headset big time feedback.
This does not happen with either a Telex ANR or Peltor headset.

I've got the same problem! What's a split bead ferrite? I'd like to
try it.

You can pick them up at any electronics supply house, including Radio Shack.
