Flight Planning to Las vegas from Bay area
Hello all,
I was just wondering which route most pilots took from the bay area to Las Vegas. I had looked at the sectional and wondered if the Mammoth pass (Friant VOR 023 radial to Mammoth) had been attempted, and how safe it was... Just looking for a route any suggestions would be great! I would be flying a Pa28-180, No O2... Thank you in advance Troy |

I planned two routes, 1 south skirting the southern edge of the Edwards restricted airspace and a nothern route crossing Lake Tahoe and then basically south paralleling highway 95. Going, I took the southern route, stopping at PTV for a break and to top the tanks. I then went via VIS PMD DAG HEC and then direct into the LAS airspace where LAS approach gave me vectors to the Red Rock Golf course for a right base entry into VGT. If the Edwards restricted airspace is not in use, Joshua approach will clear you through it. I was at 9,500 or less all the way. Returning, I decided to do some sightseeing and went north remaining west of highway 95 but cut west of Goldfield and Tonopah. I landed at Yerington for a break and some real cheap 100LL ($2.40/gal on July 8th). I then basically headed west over Minden, crossing Lake Tahoe and then south into the Bay area. Stayed at 10,500 or lower all the way. -- Marty Shapiro Silicon Rallye Inc. (remove SPAMNOT to email me) |

if you prefer the south route.. but don't trust Mammoth..
you can easily cross the mountains into Lake Isabella, Kern Valley, then Inyokern (IYK) and direct to Las Vegas, crossing over "Red Rocks" between Mt Charleston and Mt Potosi. Direct to VGT, Right base Rw 12R or straight in on Rwy 7, get down early to stay clear of the ClassB Joshua Appch will either allow you through or south of the China Lake restricted airspace, if the Ft Irwin airspace is hot then you'll have to "shoot the Trona Gap" and proceed to LAS across the southern part of Death Valley. Joshua Appch can see you most of the way at about 10,000MSL. I've never had problems on weekends in the China Lake airspace about 5000ft AGL. This time of the year.. go early.. across the mountains before the CUs build up. We are in monsoon season. BT "Marty Shapiro" wrote in message ... Troy,
totally depends on the weather, IMHO. I've flown right across the Tioga pass in a Bonanza (more power, admittedly) without O2, but the weather was REALLY benign. The Mammooth pass off the Fryant VOR is very well doable, if the winds are low (and the temperatures not too high). If they aren't, your option is to go further south. -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

BT Agreed. the airspace along J110 going through China Lake is hot Monday through Friday, but is free for use over the weekend. That would be why you were able to head through it. But definitely go early on this one; not only because of the monsoonal flow, but density altitude will come into play.
