Looking at this, I'm reminded that in the 1950's, RAF trainers, like the
Prentice, Oxford and Balliol, had large areas of the canopy in orange/amber
perspex. Used in conjunction with blue tinted goggles, the overall effect
was the same as night, or so I was told.

Same thing. The training squadrons fly with both markings in the same unit
since they train USN and USMC aviators.
