Default Microprose Gunship! Helicopter simulation news

Microprose released their last version of Gunship in 2000 just before Hasbro
sold the company to Infogramme. The *first* version of Gunship was released
in 1986 or so, and along with Silent Service II and other Microprose games,
is still considered a classic, with many fans still playing them.

Some people said that the last version of Gunship was released before it was
quite ready, and in fact there *were* some bugs and other anomalies, *but*
they may *not* know that Microprose released an official patch *and* that a
dedicated group of modders has taken this gorgeous sim even further with
more patches and enhancements.

Many people say that Gunship!'s scenario and immersiveness is still
unequaled among military simulations.

There is a brand new Battle (Mission) Builder to replace the in-game
version. Many more helo's and other vehicles have been added, and new
terrains made and improved. Internet multiplayer experience is rock solid.

Here is the center of modding efforts:

Lots of Gunship! discussion goes on he http://gunshiplink.homestead.com/

The first link also has a very active multiplayer internet group

available in software bargain bins and even on eBay. So, get it and join

If you can convince me that it's better than Longbow2 or even the
Razorback stuff, you might pique my interest. But way back when I bought
this game, I was underwhelmed.

Perhaps the after-market folks have turned it into more of a realistic
simulation?

Thanks. This means that I will either re-install Apache/Havoc and/or
Comanche/Hokum, or wait for something from http://www.combat-helo.com/.

cheers,

dB.

Nope. Last time I tried it all the mods were graphics based and not
much else. The avionics is still cheesy.

That's looks interesting but there has been no new news posted there
in over a year.

The official Microprose patch fixes quite a few things, and also allows you
to customize the flight models of the various aircraft. Example:

[ApacheFlightModel] // block for helo to modify
Ycg= -0.03 // effects amount of restoring torque from roll
YawDrag= 5.0 // yaw rate dampening factor
TailRotorForce= 0.15 // side force from tail rotor
TailTrim= 0.10 // tail rotor force neutral value
RotorTorque= 0.12 // rotor torque factor "yaw"
TailPlane= 0.001 // Tail restoring "lift" factor from forward velocity
SideSlip= 5.5 // side slip torque restoring factor "yaw"

GroundEffectFactor= 0.001 // ground effect
TransLiftFactor= 0.16 // lift above 20 knots

And they still fly like an arcade game. I've got Gun****! I've tried
the mods, it don't do it for me.
