I'm trying to get my MS Flight System working well and want to know what
settings to use for the various display options to optimize my
performance I have a AMD 3000 cpu with 2GB ram and a GEForce 8600 gts
video card.

You might want to copy this to alt.games.microsoft.flight-sim, where many
related discussions and simmers live.

I started by turning everything up to the maximum. Then I went down the list
of settings provided in the MSFS online help (which explains, briefly, what
each setting does to the visuals) and decided what I'd be willing to sacrifice
the most, gradually notching things down and watching the frame rate. When
the frame rate was high enough to be comfortable for me, I stopped.

The things that seem to slow the sim the most are complex weather patterns,
fancy add-on scenery, and high settings for things like autogen. But all of
the settings interact, and what you're willing to give up vs. what you really
want to retain is a matter of personal preference. For example, I gave up
more autogen than weather because a realistic sky is often more meaningful to
me than lots of ground scenery. And I've set gauge visuals to maximum quality
because I fly a lot on instruments--someone who prefers to fly VFR might want
better scenery but might be willing to put up with slightly blurrier
instruments.

Copy it there? Why not just take it there. That's where it belongs.

I did take it there, by copying my reply to that group. Strangely, you
removed the sim group in your reply above, and left only
rec.aviation.piloting. Wouldn't it make more sense to practice what you
preach?

Posted suitable to the occasion.

We know you like to drag folks of diverse interest together to promote
disagreement. Just a lame attempt to create noise. You're not even a decent
troll.

Ah, I see why nature in it's wisdom has given you no sex drive now.
