Default Parallel Runway Operation

Any glider operations (clubs, commercial, etc.) have written authority
to use the grass next to a paved main runway when the two runways do
not meet FAA specs for obstacle free zones or separation?

Looking for FAA waivers, local airport authority agreements, or other
pertinent paperwork.

Thanks

Advisory Circular AC90-66A Recommended Standard Traffic Patterns and
Practices for Aeronautical Operations at Airports without Operating
Control Towers might be helpful. Appendix 2 illustrates a glider
operating area next to the powered runway and shows traffic patterns
for the runway and landing area.

We call our grass landing area a 'safety area' rather than a runway,
and reference the memo above -- FAA and airport management seem happy
with that arrangement....

Yes, Evergreen Soaring near Seattle flying out of KAWO may be the
poster boy for this. Last year there was an attempt to move us to a
different part of the airfield due to separation issues, however that
move would not have been safe. After a lot of effort including filmed
operations and a very detailed study by us of the different options
the FAA accepted the existing condition. I have all the paperwork
etc. I will move it to a location from where it can be downloaded and
provide a link.
