Why apologize? As a pilot and aircraft owner I found it interesting and
bookmarked it in case I would need more toys.

Because he spammed all of the newsgroups that I read, not just
the ones that might have a use for his tools.

Ahh!

I always wondered out of the millions of spam messages, what fool actually
clicks on a link and buys something form a spammer. Now I know.

NEVER BUY FROM UNSOLOCITED SPAMMERS. The Internet depends on it.

Ain't it just wonderful how we can just call total strangers whom we do
not know names and feel real good about ourselves. Do you just walk
up to them at the airport and compliment them in the same way?
Does it make you feel good? Why would it be any business of yours
whatsoever if I click on a post?

Why would it be any business of yours whatsoever if I click on a post?

Because the only reason Spam exists is because it works.

It's like telemarketing. If people had just stopped saying "yes!" there
would have been no need for a Federal "Do-Not-Call" list...

When you click on Spam and actually buy something, you are, in essence,
harming us all by perpetuating its existence.

(Assuming, of course, that it's universal to hate Spam emails and posts.)

At the very least, Jim can accurately determine that you are acting
foolishly. Granted, all of us act foolish, even though some of us are not
fools. But when you act foolishly in a way that negatively affects all of
the rest of us, you sure do open yourself to simply being labeled a fool.

Do you just walk
up to them at the airport and compliment them in the same way?

I've at least twice had people walk up to me at an airport and "compliment"
me in a similar way, and one of those times they had a legitimate beef. In
that instance, I apologized profusely for blasting their hangar with my prop
wash. In the second instance, I enjoyed taking the moment to point out how
dumb the person yelling at me was being (and that shut them up pretty good).

Bottom line: if someone criticizes you legitimately, you ought to be willing
to take a moment to consider the criticism as being helpful, no matter how
offensively you think it was put (and frankly, Jim's post was hardly a major
assault).

What he said. Pete and I both know what it's like to be majorly assaulted
by each other.

Incidentally, at the time I was posting this silly rant (that really wasn't
meant to offend and how can an anonymous poster be offended, anyway?) I was
also working on an article for our local newspaper's "E-Life" section
concerning spam. I got part of my motivation for approaching the paper from
the folks around here who have gone on to fame and fortune by becoming "A
Published Author" or even on TV -- Hi Roger, Jay and others. Looks like it
might happen.

Anyhoo, the article is about why spam exists, why the problem won't go away
and what you can do about it.

I hope the article will serve to educate a small amount of folks to NEVAH,
EVAH click on an unsolicited pop-up ad, email link or Usenet link.

So, "Otis," sorry to offend . . . but you got to change your evil ways.

Hi Jay,

Oh, I see... so when I posted my message about the freeware version of
my flight planner on Rec.Aviation.Piloting and was labeled a spammer
because I don't give away free database updates, then I am an evil
spammer and no one should buy from me.

When you post messages about your hotel on Rec.Aviation.Piloting, you
are just a friendly neighborhood inn-keeper and not a spammer.

I smell a double standard!

Dean
