Hmm. Detroit Approach controllers usually seem annoyed if you're
calling for anything but to cancel IFR. I supposed it's a workload
issue. I called to ask about routing once, and they advised me to file
direct and be ready to write when I called back for my clearance.

Is there any way we non-controllers can find this stuff out, except by
experience?

Practically none. The A/FD has some preferred IFR routes, but they're
primarily high altitude routes between hubs. A study of them can held
discern which are the arrival routes for a location and thus which to avoid
if you're departing that area.

For the larger metropolitan areas, I've found that DUATS will sometimes
suggest departure routes when you use it's flight-planning feature.

If you approach Detriot from the south, your routing anywhere north of
the city will be vectored to the west, around Willow Run, then to the
VOR, then on direct.
