Once the price of an unrestored spit went over £250,000, the RAF decided it
was time to harvest all the Spitfire and (the very few) Hurricane gate
guardians and replace them with these fibreglass replicas. Looks like they
had one or two left over for the colonies.

Just about all of my models as a kid had a glued-in fingerprint somewhere on
the wings or sometimes on the canopy. I suppose all artists sign
their work, most of my carpentry is signed with blood.

It is a blood sport - I've lost count of the number of times I've slashed my
fingers while trimming off bits of excess plastic or balsa wood.
