Three things a pilot can't use:
- runway behind him
- altitude above him
- preflight planning he didn't do

If I were taking off with a questionable engine, I would have taxied down
the highway several hundred yards, then turned around and tried taking off,
giving lots of room for the engine to fail again but allow me to land
safely. You can only get lucky a couple of times.

First he was taking off in the direction of traffic flow. Traffic moving
probably 60-70. Take off speed probably 55-60. If he turned around he would
be taking off into traffic,Ouch. Since the owner changed the defective
cylinder I am sure he is a qualified mechanic and knew enough to test the
engine thoroughly before taking off.

That single car at the top of the picture is in all likehood a police car
blocking traffic. Taxi down to the cop, turn around, take off. My
interpretation only.

I learned to fly in LA where you don't have a lot of places to land "off
airport" safely.
