Default removing old, dried, masking tape

Someone used masking tape many years ago to cover some screwheads on
my leading edge. Pulling it off only gives me strips of masking tape.

Any suggestions on how to remove this stuff? - Mike

Goo-B-Gone

Dab it on the masking tape and let it set a while to soak in. Then use
a flexable plastic scrapper to remove the majority. You can then use a
rag with some of the Goo-B-Gone to remove and clean the area. I have
even used the stuff on the Plexi-Glass windshield without any problems.
It seems to be safe to use on all types of paint as well.

Good Luck.

Bob

Also a product called goof off. Use it the same way or use a green
plastic scratch pad

I've used both Acetone and Mineral Spirits to remove the old, dried
adhesive. It takes a bit of elbow grease too. 100 MPH tape is worse
than masking tape.

MEK should take it off... but you might need an old toothbrush at some point too..

I have tried both Acetone and MEK in the past and eventually was able
to get the tape off but neither worked half as well as the Goo-B-Gone.
Both can also be destructive to paint or certain other components. I
was very surprised at how well the Goo-B-Gone was able to soften the
adhesive without having to work at it. Doesn't smell as bad a Acetone
or MEK either.

Xylene works, too! It is used as a thinner for contact cement.

A 3M product in a spray can called "Citris Cleaner" also works great.
Spray it on, let it sit for a bit and peel tape or wipe any tape
residue right off. Won't damage the finish at all. One thing though -
if tape will be going back in that location, the area must be cleaned
with someting like windex to get it completely clean or you can't get
the tape to stick.
