You've never worked at a company with a real IT department, have you? Ours doesn't allow anything out of the firewall without passing through proxies that they can monitor, and that means web telnet, or ftp only. Not even ssh, which is a royal pain in the ass. -- Paul Tomblin http://xcski.com/blogs/pt/ I find that anthropomorphism really doesn't help me deal with hardware all that much, because it lends a certain attitude of disdain to what would otherwise be a mere malfunction. -- Carl Jacobs |

I'm root ... :-) Ours doesn't allow anything out of the firewall without passing through proxies that they can monitor, and that means web telnet, or ftp only. I have the doubtful pleasure to host a site for someone (google translates it with 'work council') who needs to access the site from within the company he is working for (Swarovski crystal [1]). Not even ssh, which is a royal pain in the ass. you can change the port ssh is using (but you might then violate our company's usage policy) #m [1] their headquarter is only 15 minutes by car away from here. -- http://www.hotze.priv.at/album/aviation/caution.jpg |

Tell your boss to get a clue. As long as you're reading the newsgroups on your own time, there's no reason you shouldn't have NNTP access on your work network. I tried to get the jerk fired, but it didn't work out. ;-) -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

It's because he has an unreasonable employer. Yeah, he's a cheap *******... :-) -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

I don't particularly want to get fired, though. well, this is a very good point, isn't it? #m -- http://www.hotze.priv.at/album/aviation/caution.jpg |

Steven P. McNicoll wrote: I find it more difficult to track message threads compared to the previous format. I think it's a step backward. Like Jay, I use it at work because I have no NNTP access. I've been using Beta since it came out and it's been getting better. I think the biggest problem was learning how to navigate groups with the new interface. After using it for a few weeks, I finally got it set up so that I can see the threads easily and navigate the groups that I follow. I used to just use the "advanced search" page to read the groups. With Beta, I actually signed up and gave it the list of my preferred groups. Like I said, it's not perfect by any standard, but it seems to work OK once you get the hang of it. Well, at the very least, you ought to hack the network (to ensure NNTP goes through) and install a non-web newsreader. That'll show the *******. The hard part will be getting access to the network without him noticing. Tempt him with some beer. |

Oddly enough. try forte. it is free. - www.forteinc.com You mean Agent. No, wait...you mean Free Agent. Agent costs money. Outlook Express is free too. So is 40tude Dialog. There are probably others. But until Jay gets NNTP acccess, all of that is irrelevant. Pete |
