Sure just google for "747 spare engine". It mounts just inboard of the
#2 engine. I've got photos of the spare engine mount hard points....if
I had an easy place to post them I would.

That is the strangest damn thing I have ever seen. Do these hard points
exist on all 747's, or just a few for special use?

I would suspect all of them. All of the ones I've been close enough
to look at have had them. I suspect more have it than not (maybe some
of the shorthaul domestic Japanese variants don't).

"Marc CYBW" posted the exciting
message news:bUnnf.159747$yS6.141427@clgrps12:

Why wouldn't one simply transport a "spare" in the cargo hold?

I've gotta wonder what you have been smoking. Have any factual cites for
either of these claims?

I wonder if the cargo area has the structural strength to carry a heavy
engine. Actual cargo planes have stronger floors, I"d bet the floor of
the cargo area of a pax plane is pretty wimpy for weight.

One has to be able to get the engine into the cargo hold of a passenger
jet before worrying about whether the floor can hold the weight.

Sorry about that crack. I had never heard of anything like that, and to
success of others, they produced pictures showing the practice.

I still think it is weird.

It was an option from Boeing and not many took it. I believe Qantas
was the first airline to have that capability on the 747.

It was on all of the first 30 B-747s from Boeing that PanAm bought.
And....our B-707s came with the fifth pod capability.
