FA: Soviet SST
Soviet SST
Moon, Howard: SOVIET SST: THE TECHNO-POLITICS OF THE TUPOLEV-144 New York: Orion Books, 1989. First edition. Near fine with very good jacket. One tidy tear on rear of dust jacket. Rear panel lightly soiled. 276 pages, 24 pages of b&w photos. "In 1961, the Soviet Union began a program to develop a supersonic airliner- a commercial transport that would fly at 1,500 miles per hour while seating more than a hundred passengers. For the Soviets, who had already shocked the world with their bold firsts in the space race, this as to be another step toward technological parity with the West. But, by 1984, after two fatal crashes involving the SST, including one at the prestigious Paris air show, the program was scraped. What went wrong? "Soviet SST concentrates on the political ups and downs of the Soviet Union's leading aircraft designer, Andrei N. Tupolev, and his relationship with Nikita Krushchev, who sought spectacular achievements to use as a political stick against the West. With its maiden flight two months earlier than the British-French Concorde, the Soviet's TU-144 was the envy of the world, albeit briefly. In the end, political intrusion into technological development drove the Soviets to overreach, and their program came crashing down. "This is an important book for aircraft specialists, aviation historians, sovietologists, students of technology and international relations, and anybody who would like a glimpse into the inner workings of the Soviet Union." starting bid = $9.50 http://tinyurl.com/fu4d -- Don & Meg Jernigan The Ink Company 5930 Dillingham Avenue Shreveport, LA 71106 Phone: 318-773-2153 FAX: 253-369-5197 http://www.inkcobooks.com ______________________________________________ |
