Default CGX closed (WHY!)

I am ashamed and embarrased to live in the same state the govenor of Chicago
does.
What he did to Meigs was irrisponsible, childish, immature, cowardly and
increadbly retarded! For those that do not know what im talkin about, the so
called "mayor" of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, destroyed Merril C. Meigs field
without permission from the state or anyone else. last year he snuk bulldozers
on to the CGX runway and carved 4 Xs in the runway. In the morning plane took
off from the taxiway and the ones that coulnd were put on trucks. He says he
did because it was a "risk to Chicago" because of its close proximity to
downtown Chicago. Its taken me this long to realize that HE IS THE TERRORIST.
He caused pain, suffering, money, convenence and happyness to deteriorate among
us pilots. He must want us to host flyins and Young Eagle Rallys at O'Hare .
I am going to write letters to Daley and the Govenor praying for mercy to
reopen CGX. Its caseing the Chicago economy to drop and MDW and ORD to become
busier. Thats why IL wants a reliver airport for O'Hare, all the Genral
Aviation traffic is at O'Hare and Midway now instead of the "Prettiest Little
airport on the planet" So, what do you think, shoud we all write letters, send
E-mails etc.
And if you, could, tell some of your stories about CGX (those that have flown
there) it has bee a dream of mine since I was 5 and no because of that baby
Daley, I can't fulfill that. Neither could other pilots I would imagine.

Thanks,
Trace Lewis

You go get 'em, Trace. You (and other folks your age) are the only hope
Chicago has for a bright, "Daley-less" future.

I was fortunate enough to fly into Meigs several times, and it was memorable
each time. After having flown that final approach to RWY 36 countless times
in "Flight Simulator," it felt curiously familiar -- in a surreal way -- to
be sliding down that glideslope "for real" to a gentle touchdown on that
beautiful peninsula. The skyscrapers on the left, and the deep blue of
Lake Michigan on the right, made for a picture perfect arrival.

And, of course, the time spent in downtown Chicago was priceless. Taking my
kids to Ed Debevec's for an "abusive lunch" was worth every penny we paid in
landing fees. (My 13 year old son, Joey, STILL talks about that flight...)

I still cringe involuntarily every time I think about bulldozers ripping up
that gorgeous, one-of-a-kind facility. :-(

The monster Daley must be crushed. In five years you can vote -- use that
power wisely, and influence everyone you can to do the same thing.

Take care,

I use to fly into CGX often for weekend getaways or shows at McCormick
Place.. I have not been back to Chicago since he closed the airport. I
don't plan on ever coming back. Downtown hotels are generally empty on the
weekend. There is now one more empty hotel room since Daley screwed up.

Finally happened yesterday! I got some junk mail from an outfit in Chicago! I
got right on the computer and sent them a polite letter to the effect that I
don't do business with Chicago firms since Daley trashed Meigs.

I've done them both too.

Except in real life the framerate doesn't drop to 5 fps as you turn
towards the skyscrapers...

Sadly, there's no way for me to be sure of this.

That was one of the reasons its affecting the economy.
This spring I am flying to Midway and plan to fly over the lakefront and pay my
tribute and respect to meigs, even if I cant land there I can do a flyby or an
approach with a goarond at the last minute.

I flew into Meigs first in 1991 after a trip to Oshkosh. Like Jay, I had
flown many times on
flight simulator into Meigs, long before I had even taken a flying lesson.
That landing was a
thrill of my life, on par with my first solo flight. My friend (fellow
pilot and co-owner of our 172)
had the time of our lives in Chicago that weekend.

Since that first time, my friend and I, and my wife and I ,made many trips
to Meigs.
Each trip was memorable. I mourn the loss of Meigs like all.
I feel very fortunate to have flown into one of the most wonderful flying
destinations, and I
truly feel sorry for those who weren't able to.

I no longer travel to Chicago not because of a protest to Mayor Daley. I
just can't figure out a
practical way to fly there and get to downtown. And, of course, flying to
another airport would
be such a letdown.

Now I have a young boy, and I feel bad that I will never be able to share
that particular joy with
him. I envy Jay being able to fly there with his family.

-Jeff

P.S. I enjoy hearing other peoples stories of flying into Meigs. Perhaps it
will ease the pain.

Best of both worlds:

KPWK - Palwaukee

KDPA - Du Page

Nice sized airports, in the metro area, but outside of the Chicago city
limits.

Better than not giving your money to Daley, you can give it to the guys just
across the fence...

You're flying to Midway? Most of us that are really upset about
Meigs are refusing to fly to ANY Chicago airport. Mr. Daley will get
no landing fees or fuel flowage fees from my pocket.
