Judge halts work on Navy landing field in eastern N.C.

RALEIGH, N.C. – A federal judge Tuesday ordered the Navy to stop work
on a jet landing field planned in eastern North Carolina, saying the
facility could harm birds at a nearby wildlife refuge and displace
farmers.

The temporary injunction, issued by U.S. District Judge Terrence
Boyle, was sought by opponents who argued that the government's
environmental-impact studies downplayed the risk of collisions between
jets and birds.

"Planes and birds don't mix. We know that. They haven't done their
homework, for if they had, they would have known this isn't a good
site," said Mary Ann Byers, a councilwoman in the community of
Plymouth, near the site of the planned field.
