One cheaper and simpler option to buying a specialist 35mm scanner I
have seen slide scanning attachments for standard scanners and as far as
I could see they are a backlighting box offering a uniform white source
of light from behind the slide.

Here is a home made option which might be of interest and can be for
just about any size format.
