Default Question about flight computers

When you set some distant airport as the destination, do they just use the
rhomb line or do they actually calculate and maintain the great circle route
akk the way?

Sorry if this seems obvious. I'm using a flight sim (xplane), and I'm
always suspicious about what the Real Thing does.
