Default Gariep Dam

I have posted many new photos on the facebook albums.

In case you were wondering, for the current season the top four OLC
airfields are all in Southern Africa.

Namibia is way ahead - with large pilot contingents and an earlier start
Bitterwasser leads Pokweni and Kiribotip.

Gariep Dam Airfield in South Africa is fourth on the list. For what it
is worth pilots at Gariep Dam have an average flight distance of 597km
per flight and 4199km per pilot.
Highest stats - Bitterwasser is at 803km per flight and Kiripotib at
5012km per pilot.

Not a bad season so far.

Thanks for the update, Bruce. I have noticed that every day since, starting November 27th, there has been at least one 1000KM+ OLC flight somewhere in the world. WIth the majority being in Southern Africa.

Good show, guys! Keep it up!

It's the darn weather. Last Saturday I was obliged to use full airbrake
on my Kestrel to get back down while we were checking out a new
tug+pilot combination.

I got off tow at 1000" so as to get back for the next launch, set up a
lazy orbit and was somewhat surprised to find the vario "malfunctioning"
with 6.2m/s indicated by the time I had cleaned up the wheel and set the
airfield s the correct destination etc.

The cycle time was somewhat longer as a consequence.

Huge fun.

Very nice weather in Africa this season.
Many a thermal 1000k has been flown in Kestrels (and 2000k has been done in wave)... But what happened to that ~800km flight out of Gariep Dam in an Antonov A-15, no longer on OLC?

Hi Jim

Sorry - don't know.
"My" kestrel has done a couple of thermal 1000s. Just not with the
current incompetent behind the stick.
