Default Garmin GPSMAP 296 released

Looks interesting, but very pricey. Several avionics suppliers are
advertising it, though.

If you go around beating the Bush, don't complain if you rile the animals.

Does anyone know if it has the obstruction database (antennas, etc.) that
Garmin has heretofore refused to include in their GPSs?

The Pacific Coast ad mentions "obstructions" in an oblique way.

If it does, this would be a huge step in the right direction for Garmin.

I would go for the 196. I tested it some months ago in the air. I also had a
look at the 296. The fact that there's NO color in the 196, made it easier
to handle. The screen of the 296 is to colourful for me.
If you can operate a Garmin III, the 196 is no problem.

Are you sure you didn't have a look at the 295, not the 296? Garmin
hasn't officially announced the 296 yet, and it's only appeared on some
store web sites in the last few days.

From the screen shots, I'd say the 296 has SIGNIFICANTLY raised the

readability over that of the 295.

Go checkout the Sporty's page for it... they have some other
screenshots. It looks like antennas, etc are included.

Good for Garmin! Just goes to show that any good company will eventually
succumb to popular demand.

Now if only they can grow that dinky screen a bit. $1700 for *that* little
thing?

One review I read says that it has a complete TAWS database and will warn
you of terrain and obstructions.

This would make it one of the cheapest TAWS units around.
