These two documents have information on surface preparation for bonding.

I built several glued together aluminum fuel tanks and discovered that I
could consistently make a glue joint fail if I wiped the joint surfaces
with acetone or alcohol after etching and rinsing with water. So I
stopped solvent wiping. I never tried MEK.

Here are two of my tanks:

Those should give me pretty good range!

What are those tanks for?

They were originally made by BHC, the British Hovercraft Corporation, so
I presume they were originally for hovercraft. I don't know how they
ended up in Boeing helicopters, which is what the photo shows, but two
500 gallon internal tanks work better than two 1000 gallon external
tanks when the helicopter is used for logging. I built 5 from scratch
using BHC drawings, and I converted several original BHC tanks from
bladder to wet cell. (In between other projects, of course).

Four out of the five were in aircraft which have crashed and burned.
So it goes.
