Default Ideas/tips please: Etrex Legend (with or without Palm M515/IIIxe) for VFR aviation

Hello Everybody,

Thanks for everyone for the suggestions to my earlier questions. I have
decided and bought an Etrex Legend, after all. I also have MapSource's
Canada Metroguide with it.

Now I ask for ideas and/or tips on how to set up and use this unit (either
together with an M515 or an older IIIxe Palm handheld, or as a standalone
unit) for general aviation (I'm still a - very interested - student, by the
way...).
I will be grateful to get inputs about what desktop program to use for what
purpose(s), how to set up the units, what to load, what to delete, etc.

Thank you in advance for all responses. I will watch the newsgroups, but
here is my email address as well (without the obvious...):

There is a great web page for downloading selected aviation waypoints for
your local area

My suggestion is that you learn to use it as a stand along unit. Use the
map page to navigate. On the map page, select the options to Show Nav
Status, and Show Data Fields. Set one data field to TURN and one to OFF
COURSE. There are a couple of sites such as Paul Tomblin's www.navaid.com
to get waypoints. Go to www.garmin.com to make sure that you have the
latest software so that you can load 1000 instead of 500 waypoints. Learn
to use the map display to create routes.

Download my book at www.cockpitgps.com. Many of the screen shots are from a
Garmin GPS III Plus. However, the Legend will give you similar information.
