Unhappy 0-320 propellor shaft movement on engine?

After looking and feeling my friends airplane.. I push and pulled on prop to feel a over tolerance(I thought)(which i felt that was too much on the prop pull) pull on the propellor... is this due thrush bearings on the crankshaft being worn too much...engine was close to needing overhauled... what has my friend bought... future problems for a expensive overhaul?...Will oil be flowing out the frot soon.... what do I tell him....?

hours to TBO -1800hrs for this type engine...

You're going to overhaul the engine because it's dirty?

Paint stripper and pressure washer for the crankcase, then 2-part epoxy
primer and 2-part final coat of paint (gloss, of course.)

Engine enamel is inferior to the 2-part stuff out there. It also works
on the cylinders.
